Using the Camera Without the App

Using the Facemask Camera Without the App

This guide covers how to operate the Facemask camera manually — without the Facemask Camera mobile app.

1. Recording

The camera starts recording automatically when powered on, as long as the SD card is inserted. No setup is required to begin recording.

Recordings are saved to the SD card as a series of sequential MP4 files:

facemask_0.mp4
facemask_1.mp4
facemask_2.mp4
...

A new file is started automatically at the end of each segment. The default segment length is 1 minute.

Video Specifications

Audio Codec AAC
Container MP4

To stop recording, power off the camera.

Warning: See Known Issues regarding the last segment when powering off.

2. Configuring the Camera

Settings are stored in a file called config.json in the root of the SD card. To change settings:

  1. Remove the SD card from the camera.
  2. Insert it into your computer.
  3. Open config.json with any text editor.
  4. Edit the values and save the file.
  5. Re-insert the SD card — changes take effect on the next power-on.

Example config.json:

{
  "segmentMinutes": 1,
  "audioEnabled": true
}

Settings

segmentMinutes — How long each recording segment is before a new file is started.

  • Accepted values: 1 to 15
  • Default: 1
  • Example: set to 10 for 10-minute segments

audioEnabled — Whether audio is recorded alongside video.

  • Accepted values: true or false
  • Default: true

3. Copying Recordings to Your Computer

  1. Power off the camera.
  2. Remove the SD card and insert it into your computer.
  3. Open the SD card — the recording files will be in the root folder, named facemask_0.mp4, facemask_1.mp4, etc.
  4. Copy the MP4 files to your computer as you would any other file.
  5. We suggest you move the MP4 files to your computer to keep space open on the SD card.

Note: Video timestamps may not reflect the actual recording time. Use the file number (e.g., facemask_5.mp4) to identify the order of recordings.

Known Issues

  • Last segment may not be saved on power loss. If the camera is powered off while a segment is actively being recorded, that file may be incomplete or unplayable. All previously completed segments will be intact. To avoid losing footage, allow the current segment to finish before powering off when possible.
